Sparking connection: showcasing your researchers to create new routes to research discoverability and collaboration

In our increasingly globalized world, there is a growing need for institutions to showcase their greatest assets: the expertise and experience of researchers and faculty. Not only can this increase the discoverability and impact of research, it can also open up new pathways for collaboration both in and off campus, and create new opportunities to explore industry and community partnerships.

DiscoverResearch, launched in June 2023, is a new online public profile portal to highlight, celebrate and promote University of Toronto (U of T) experts across all disciplines. The tool connects U of T’s scholarly and research expertise with audiences like media, prospective graduate students, and academic collaborators, while simultaneously helping faculty keep track of the very important work they do. With automatic harvesting of trusted data from trusted sources (TSpace, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, internal grant management systems and more), DiscoverResearch offers a comprehensive view of a researcher’s outputs and scholarly activities.

In this session, we will cover some of the new initiatives that U of T are embarking on to support and promote their researchers in new, innovative ways through DiscoverResearch. We will discuss best practices around how to communicate and engage users in new tools, as well as some of the functional and technical considerations to consider before launching a new institutional platform.

With this partnership, we have the opportunity to position ourselves as
a world leader in the development of the scholarly ecosystem.

Keith Webster, Dean of University Libraries, Carnegie Mellon

I cannot overstate how pleased we have been.
We have to have confidence to work with a partner
for at least 5 years on a project of this size.

Caleb Smith, Senior Strategy Manager for Research Intelligence & Analytics, University of Michigan

“Faculty need only spend perhaps less than an hour a year to prepare and submit their annual reports.”

Associate Dean, Carnegie Mellon University at Qatar

"Leveraging the interoperability between Symplectic Elements and DSpace has increased policy-driven institutional repository deposits by over 350%."

Elements elegantly connected our multi-university system providing a
single source of truth throughout OIEx.

Tim Cain, The Ohio Innovation Exchange (OIEx)

The University measures the individual research activity of academic staff. This Measure of Research Activity (MoRA) requires the collection of publication data from faculty. Symplectic Elements supports this beautifully.

Floris van der Leest, Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia

[Elements] will help to bring transparency to the richness of thought showcased within non-traditional publications, providing a more holistic representation of faculties’ scholarly work.

Caleb Smith, University of Michigan

Feedback to date has been extremely positive from all levels across the University, with individual academics and colleagues actively promoting the ease of use of the system.
